Toward an intersubjective conception of theories of mind in autism: Results of a qualitative action research project

Par : Contributeur(s) : Type de matériel : TexteTexteLangue : français Détails de publication : 2019. Sujet(s) : Ressources en ligne : Abrégé : Surprised by a distinctive encounter with children with autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) but no intellectual disability, we were led to question the concept of a Theory of Mind (ToM)—something other authors have already rendered more complex by discussing a “ToM of others” that is consubstantial with an auto- or self-ToM (Georgieff and Speranza 2013). We conducted an action research project with seven families of children with ASD, between six and ten years of age. Our hypothesis is that some manifestations of autism are not explained by a child’s ToM deficit, but by a specific interworking of ToMs between parent and child. We propose calling this “inter-ToM.” We then constructed a dual clinical approach that combines psychotherapy, inspired by mentalization-based child therapies, with a space for their families, for observing and supporting parental representations. We conducted a qualitative study using IPA (Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis). This revealed that, within a given device, it was possible to observe some modifications of the ToMs of the parents of autistic children, and to alter these parental representations. In our opinion, these results allow us to take a more complex approach to the concept of ToM by specifying the way in which they are inter-intentional, dynamic, and fluid, as well as the potential for intersubjective modifications.
