At a time when the identification, assessment, and diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a major issue in terms of public health policy, it is important to consider how to provide these assessments. This article presents the clinical reflection of the team at the Unité de Diagnostic et d’Évaluation Pluri-professionnelle (UNIDEP) (Center for Diagnosis and Multidisciplinary Assessment) in Bondy (93) on the diagnostic evaluation protocol provided to children and their parents. A specific system has been set up in which parents collaborate with professionals to assess and reflect on their child’s symptoms in standardized assessment situations that bring out their child’s particularities. Beyond accompanying the recognition of the signs of ASD in their child, the joint observation of the child by the parents, professionals present at the meeting with the child, and the clinician in session makes it possible to co-construct a representation of the child’s internal experience and functioning and to support a better mutual adjustment.
