Joan of Arc, a teenager like any other?

Joan of Arc (1412-1431) is one of the most iconic figures in French history. Refusing the destiny assigned to her–marriage and motherhood–she left her family for the army, liberating Orleans at the age of 17 before being captured and burned alive two years later. The unique trajectory of this teenager is an object of fascination that has raised many questions on the part of doctors who have taken an interest in her life and the events that have marked it. In this work, we propose to retrace all the retro-diagnoses attributed to Joan of Arc since the 19th century. Far from wishing to engage in a similar exercise of pathologizing the character, we wish, in the light of the biographical elements and diagnoses mentioned, to propose that Joan of Arc be imagined in the guise of an adolescent like any other.
