Identity disorders hold nothing more than a marginal place in contemporary diagnostic systems in psychiatry. However, a better understanding of their nature would give a finer perspective with which to view psychopathology. Developmental psychologists, through their work on the emergence of intersubjectivity and sense of Self, and their descriptions of disordered attachment, offer useful tools for understanding. These ideas are sketched out with examples of identity disorders in schizotypes and borderline conditions.
