The past years have seen a veritable avalanche of publications of and on Freud: hitherto unpublished correspondence, other primary materials, and a mass of secondary and tertiary literature. On the occasion of his 150th birthday in 2006, the speed with which these volumes appeared has even been increased, not to mention the hype generated in the mass media, second only to the one about Mozart. So how much do we actually know by now about Freud the man and scientist, about his life and work? How far advanced is Freud scholarship? Where can non-specialists turn to get reliable information, and how can they distinguish unsubstantiated claims from historical facts?
