Oppositional Disorders in Children: Understanding and Treating Them
Type de matériel :
79
Treatment requests pertaining to oppositional disorders in children are increasing in child and adolescent psychiatry. Concurrently, violence represented as a consequence of opposition is mentioned daily in our societies. Departing from a paradigmatic situation, this paper discusses oppositional behaviors and their therapeutic treatment. In the name of understanding, this paper reviews various etiologies and the distinction between violence and aggressiveness. Whereas opposition (the “no”) expresses separation and individuation, its persistence for more than 30 to 36 months is indicative of a “developmental avatar.” Different factors are needed to explain this. They pertain to the subject, the environment, and the society. This paper then turns to treatment. It discusses various aspects of the therapeutic treatment of oppositional disorders, such as the demand, the format and content of meetings, and concrete living arrangements.
