Reducing algorithms uncertainty

The “Admission Post-Bac” (APB) national platform, opened in 2009 to process post-baccalaureate wishes, bears little resemblance to the options considered before: APB doesn’t manage either bachelor guidance or selection. APB establishes a free university market and encourages free choice in the formulation of applications. Within this open configuration, the algorithm is chosen as an instrument for governing student flows and streamlining the management of applications. A priori reassuring, the APB algorithmic functioning generates uncertainty regarding admission results and encourages the adoption of strategic behaviors. The article investigate how two types of guidance professionals (specialized book authors and national education guidance counselors [COP]) have seized upon this evolution to focus their professional attention on reducing uncertainty coming from the APB opaque functioning.
