Understanding the effectiveness of EMDR through the therapeutic relationship and attachment theory

More than thirty years after the discovery of EMDR, the underlying mechanisms of this psychotherapy are still debated. Because of the use of bilateral stimulations such as eye movements, most theories have focused on neurobiological concepts in order to explain how EMDR works. This article aims at highlighting the relational factors involved in the EMDR process. This will lead us to discuss possible connections between EMDR therapy and attachment theory.
