France’s discrimination in hiring is now well documented thanks to evidence from tests based on fictitious job-seeking correspondence. The test results show that discrimination is widespread and strong, indicating an average 40% lower call-back rate for ethnic minorities. A distaste of employers toward minorities is not the only reason. The ability to accurately anticipate the skills and characteristics of candidates from minorities also plays an important role. This finding could help design new tools to restore equal treatment, based on better information about applicants’ abilities.
