How have Czech fiction films portrayed, since 1990, the forced migration of “Germans” from Czechoslovakia after World War Two? Two significant films— Habermann (2010), by Juraj Herz, and Alois Nebel (2011), by Tomaš Luňák,—serve to present the social, political, and artistic issues related to producing and diffusing narratives about dramatic events from the past in the Czech Republic. How do these cinematic narratives reflect debates about interpreting this past? They help shape collective images of recent history in the context of current attempts in the Czech Republic to rewrite the “grand national narrative.”
