How can “pragmatic sociology” help us understand collective action and activism? Its categories serve to review the structure of two protest movements: Euromaidan in Ukraine, 2013-2014, and street demonstrations in Russia, 2011-2012. The aim was to observe the function of close social bonds in these movements. Though often overlooked in the studies of social movements, activism “by attachment” has high visibility in post-Soviet societies, where civic relations are fragile.
