Verbs of giving, verbs of saying. A note on trivalent verbs

Par : Type de matériel : TexteTexteLangue : français Détails de publication : 2018. Ressources en ligne : Abrégé : Charles Sanders Peirce established that there are triadic relations that are irreducible to the conjunctions of dyadic relations. As an example, he gave the relations created by an act of giving between the giver, the given thing, and the recipient of the gift. Independently, Lucien Tesnière studied the syntax of trivalent verbs and he gave two main examples: verbs of saying and verbs of giving. One can wonder whether the syntax of trivalent verbs matches the logic of triadic relations. As a matter of fact, there is a logical difference between verbs of saying and verbs of giving, since the object of saying is propositional (saying something is saying that …) whereas the object of giving needs to be identifiable as an object of reference (to give a book to someone is to give this book or that book).
