The Bazancourt-Pomacle biorefinery, located near Reims in the Marne department, is one of the most integrated biorefineries in Europe today. This facility has two particularities. The farmers are involved in their cooperatives, and the site combines an industrial plant with an open innovation centre. The article describes this ecosystem and its unique metabolism based on the systematic search for synergies to optimise the use of the resources produced and exchanged in compliance with environmental standards. Based on a case study of this biorefinery and semi-structured interviews with management, the article shows the role of agricultural cooperatives in the development of this industrial symbiosis including shared values, patient capital and “circular financing”.
