This article examines the links between the state education system, worker education and the social and solidarity economy (SSE) in France from the 19th century to today. It shows a shift from an approach of solidarity-promoted education to a movement towards educating for solidarity. From 1820 to 1870, the precursors of the SSE and worker education turned out to be education activists (I). From 1880 to 1930, when state education became available for everyone and SSE organisations were authorised, SSE organisations tried to get schools to teach their ideas about solidarity (II). After the Second World War, the SSE and worker education seemed to develop separately from the state education system while partnerships for teaching solidarity remain (III).
