This text focuses on the alternatives developed in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries by Philippe Buchez, Charles Gide, and Léon Bourgeois—authors whose works have become reference points in the social and solidarity economy. Opponents often deem these alternatives utopian, but though their goal is the advent of a new society, they propose very concrete measures. The association or cooperative is the central component of these alternatives. This article compares and evaluates these alternatives, paying special attention to their differences.
