Cooperatives and other SSE enterprises, defined as tools for social innovation, are being shaken up. Some consider that, as a result of their economic success, the increase in their size makes them less responsive to their members, and therefore less able to meet their needs. The issue of demutualization highlights the loss of control by member-owners and a dilution of cooperatives into other traditional forms of enterprise.
