The French presence in Oceania goes back to the 18th century. The maritime dimension and the distances involved are characteristic of this continent with its great diversity of culture, language and identity. The French armed forces are deployed there as guarantor of our sovereignty whilst participating in regional security cooperation. Their many activities in partnership are daily demonstrations of the French desire to be a legitimate actor.
