This paper examines the use of the concept of emergence in the work of Tony Lawson. While this notion is widespread in institutional economics, Lawson remains the only to provide a clear ontological justification of this use. Nevertheless, I argue that Tony Lawson argument is insufficient, and that the definition of emergent phenomena he gives must be enriched through some considerations about the specificity of the social world.Classification JEL : B41, B52.
