Greater Paris: The joker in the French economy

This article is based on a report prepared as part of the preliminary work for the Greater Paris project. Two months from implementation, the aim is to evaluate the issues and dynamics that affect the “local macroeconomics,” of the implementation of the Greater Paris project. This article considers in turn the weight of the Greater Paris regional economy within France and the Île-de-France region, the fact that, unlike the larger region it is part of, Greater Paris conforms with the metropolitan dynamic model that has developed over the last fifteen years in France (and in other industrial countries), a break with what had been seen in previous years. Also noteworthy is that, in addition to this metropolitan consolidation at the national level, Greater Paris also represents an urban consolidation of large urban areas. In this case, the dynamics are reversed that previously favored the region’s “second ring,” now favoring its “Greater Paris” core, especially its center, central Paris and its surrounding municipalities. Finally, we examine the current development of the area’s labor market, its increasing integration with the rest of the region, and the transformation of a radial pattern into a new, increasingly concentric model.
