How can we calculate the economic and social costs of poor housing?

Par : Type de matériel : TexteTexteLangue : français Détails de publication : 2016. Sujet(s) : Ressources en ligne : Abrégé : Poor housing, in all of its many varied forms, affects the most vulnerable populations (those experiencing homelessness, social exclusion, overcrowding, high housing costs, etc.). In fact, qualifying and quantifying the impact of poor housing is a complicated matter, especially since the statistics available to the scientific world do not allow an easy analysis of all the forms that poor housing can take. Once all of the costs that arise from the existence of poor housing were identified (most are recorded in Program 177 of the Loi de finance, but this article endeavors to expand that list), we tried to quantify the impact of poor housing conditions on education, the labor market, and health. The results show the importance of the home environment on the set of selected research fields. Indeed, statistical links that were revealed by the econometric analysis showed that housing conditions have a significant impact on student academic success, the likelihood of finding a job, or of reporting poor health. The monetary or non-monetary quantification of the negative impacts of poor housing may be difficult, given the data and the methods used, but it allows us to shed new light on the potential consequences of housing conditions on household living conditions considered holistically over the medium and short terms.
