Determining whether or not there is a relationship, in Islam, between the practice of a professional activity and the lived religious faith, is a really challenging task. As it stands, it is easier to conclude that such a relationship does not exist, at least as historians and sociologists of Protestantism have defined it. For some time now, however, we have been hearing more and more about “market Islam” and “Protestant Islam,” to ensure that Islam is ultimately capable of economic dynamism. This assertion is, of course, beyond doubt. But it does not answer the question posed. Nor is this the purpose of this article. It merely suggests that the idea of a connection between profession and faith exists in Islam. In fact, Max Weber himself foresaw it.
