Clericalism and the sexual abuse of minors: A challenge for the pontificate of Pope Francis

Pope Francis regularly denounces clericalism as an important problem facing the Church. Clericalism is embedded in a specific social context and is perpetuated by various forms of systematic resistance. The Catholic Church is a complex, hierarchical system shaped by multiple influences: the identity and role of clerics and the relationship between authority and power must be considered. Clericalism is also maintained by corporate dynamics, including a culture of secrecy, a lack of accountability and transparency, and the inability of many Catholic bishops to envision the need for a deep reform. Nevertheless, solutions to the problem of clericalism exist, including a better sharing of responsibilities and greater collaboration between clerics and laity.
