Moral education according to Pope Francis

For Pope Francis, the main objective of moral education is to form subjects for the good and to deepen their capacity for discernment. Nevertheless, moral education cannot be considered apart from the capacities that make the subject an autonomous being and constitute her relationship with herself, with others, and with the world. The role of moral education consists in promoting these diverse capacities to enable the subject to act responsibly within history. The two texts examined here offer orientations for moral education that do not give pride of place to moral norms. Rather, Pope Francis insists on a change of perspective regarding the situations in which subjects are initiated so that they can face them responsibly, seeking to form habits that will help them to seek and to apply the good in all circumstances.
