Deepening the self and broadening the self: a new key to reading “One Health”. A response to Éric Charmetant

In response to Éric Charmetant’s contribution to this issue of the RETM, this article examines the way in which, each in their own way, Hans Jonas and Arne Næss view the natural environment as a therapy for the ontological threat which the unrestricted expansion of technological culture poses for our humanity. Drawing on the concepts of “deepening of the self” and “broadening of the self” developed in her thesis on “ecological conversion”, the author offers a fresh reading of these authors and reconsiders the notion of “One Health” in its simultaneously cosmic and intimate dimensions.
