Deliverance prayer: an effective weapon against addictions?

Deliverance prayer is increasingly becoming a more formalised and encouraged practice in the Catholic Church. It is intended for those who suffer from moral captivity due to the presence of an evil spiritual bond that paralyses the will. Renunciation of the bond and adjuration of the spirits are two central elements of the deliverance process, highlighting the key roles played by the person’s consent and the malign influence in any contracted spiritual bond. Addiction comes close to a typical situation of establishing a spiritual bond, while presenting other elements of a physical or psychic nature. A pastoral approach to deliverance lived in a logic of blessing and evangelisation can open up paths of greater communion with God for persons in the grip of addictions.
