The declarations of the rights of man or of the citizen were born in a singular political climate and were subsequently developed and proclaimed in a context where the protection of individuals or of peoples, recognised as being free to dispose of themselves, was seen as essential. Without minimising the importance of these declarations, is it not time to give them a broader basis and a loftier significance, based on a Christian vision shared by the disciples and beneficial to all human persons?
