Sexual abuse in the Church and the teaching of sexual morality

The “paradoxically excessive fixation of Catholic morality on sexual issues” noted in the CIASE report has more to do with the precision and rigour of moral prohibitions than with the quantity of interventions by the Magisterium. The defence of the institution of marriage has left sexual abuse in the shadows and neglected the suffering of victims. A renewed teaching of sexual morality should place positive emphasis on the relational dimension of human sexuality, its values, and the virtues necessary to live them, but also formulate prohibitions against all forms of violence, appropriation, and subjugation. A special section of the Catechism of the Catholic Church could be devoted to “sexual violence against persons”.
