Wonder as a resource for living ecospirituality. The experience of the Saint Hugues Spiritual Centre in Biviers

Wonder is an antidote to the sadness aroused by the degradation and ugliness of the world. But when we come into contact with nature that has remained untouched, wonder can open us up to spirituality and become a resource for living an ecospirituality, i.e. a life that is ecologically commensurate with the spiritual challenges that it presents. The Saint-Hugues Spiritual Centre at Biviers (Isère) in the French Alps is involved in this contemporary awakening to ecospirituality. During the summer session entitled “Contemplating creation in the mountains”, the centre offers retreatants the chance to enjoy a genuine experience of ecospirituality in contact with the mountains, waterfalls, and trees. The session draws on a range of disciplines and practices that encourage a sense of wonder: scientific ecology, the encyclical Laudato si’, the Bible, poetry, physical awakening, and artistic expression.
