This study examines N. Scott Momaday's work from a formal angle. Without negating the typically native American ethnic background, it highlights the surface phenomena that shape the novels of Momaday: light, body, movement, sound, gaze..., and shows how the aesthetic vision is simultaneously an experience of life and its never-ending invention of the real, the complex transformation of chaos into harmony. Here the fiction of Momaday is considered as a compendium that celebrates the essential qualities of life. The reader is presented with an intricate pattern where aesthetics is in tune with an exacting sense of the spiritual, as Momaday's poetics is informed by the spiritual belief in the efficiency of art.
