“My truck is my home”. When living in a vehicle challenges the housing norm

Young nomadic travellers and seasonal vineyard workers are little studied by researchers and little known in public policy. When they travel around rural areas, their presence questions the housing norm established by urban planning codes and social policies related to housing. Indeed, young nomadic seasonal workers living in tents, cars and mainly trucks transgress the housing norm with their mobile lifestyle. The interviews we conducted with these young people, who are often seen as deviants in the rural areas through which they travel, enabled us to understand their social world and, in so doing, the values put forward by these nomads to justify continuing with this way of life.
