The Question of the Antichrist for American Evangelicals and Fundamentalists from the 1970s till Today

Par : Type de matériel : TexteTexteLangue : français Détails de publication : 2015. Sujet(s) : Ressources en ligne : Abrégé : Even though the question of the Antichrist is as old as Christianity itself, it may appear as old-fashioned today. Still, it has been coming back with full force in the United States since the 1970s. There are several reasons for this: the Cold War-era cultural and political context has definitely played a significant role, but the most decisive factor is rooted in the religious context, and especially the considerable influence of Evangelicalism. As Bible-centered believers strongly influenced by a dualist worldview (Sin/Grace, Evil/Good, Salvation/Damnation), Evangelicals have revamped Apocalyptic literature. This study starts by analyzing why and how The Late Great Planet Earth (1970) and the Left Behind Series (1990s-2000s) encountered such considerable success. Examining Messianism, Manicheism, and Biblicism, this study aims to explain the enduring popularity of the « Apocalypse industry » in the contemporary United States.
