Women’s Access To State Senior Civil Servant Positions

Women’s access to leadership positions in government administration was very delayed and difficult in France. The sidelining of women has long been maintained by an authoritarian and an almost military design of public sector service, and by the inclusion of women in hereditary positions of power. Study of leadership positions in public service shows progress from the 2000s onward. However, senior female officials are required to mobilize more social and professional resources than men pursuing careers at a similar level. Gender inequalities amplify inequalities between senior male and female officials.
