Triage, an ethical issue during the COVID-19 pandemic. Observations and questions surrounding an oft-neglected issue

Par : Contributeur(s) : Type de matériel : TexteTexteLangue : français Détails de publication : 2021. Sujet(s) : Ressources en ligne : Abrégé : The COVID-19 pandemic will undoubtedly mark a major breakthrough for the whole of humanity. It should probably already be seen as an event that reveals the state and functioning of our health systems, before being considered as the origin of changes that are still hypothetical. This article focuses on the ethical issues raised by triage during the pandemic in France. It first recalls the context in which the issue of triage emerged during the pandemic, specifies the definitions of this notion, and outlines the main ethical issues. It then looks back at the medical fields where patient triage was deployed and the ethical problems that arose from it. It then opens up a few avenues aimed at explaining the unthought-of status that the medical and ethical question of triage has held until now. Finally, it lays down a few milestones for co-constructing an ethical reflection in this area and suggests some ways of improving the way in which current and future crises are addressed and managed. This text thus aims to contribute to ethics as a collective action whose frontiers would be defined by health professionals and citizens for a health democracy that is no longer merely professed, but real.
