The end of charisma, the fall of Daenerys’ character in Game of Thrones

Charismatic leadership, that is, relying on one’s charisma to manage collective action, is widely valued in contemporary organizations. While fictional narratives sometimes offer great illustrations of charismatic leadership, they also invite us to explore its darker facets. In this article, we focus on the persona of Daenerys Targaryen, one of the central characters of the Game of Thrones TV series, whose fall in the last season sparked much debate. Through an analysis of the episodes of the eight seasons of this series, we highlight two of the main limitations and dangers of this type of leadership: the difficulty in sustaining such leadership over time and the total lack of safeguards.
