The Syndicat Intercommunal des Eaux de la Région Grenobloise (SIERG) existed from 1947 to 2017. It has gradually become a major player in water supply at the scale of the Grenoble urban area but without serving the city of Grenoble. This article analyses the SIERG from a historical (from 1947 to 2010) and geopolitical local perspective. By retracing the history of the strategies implemented by SIERG to control water supply, the article shows the difficulty of the city of Grenoble to assert its own interests in the face of a powerful periphery.
