International comparisons of hospitals. Contributions and limits of available statistics

It shows that country differences result from several factors: the role of hospitals in health systems, differences in reporting by national statistical offices, and geographic variations in health care. Comparisons based on all hospitals and all cases do not allow assessing the appropriateness of supply or hospital efficiency. Such assessments would require analyses at the level of specific diagnoses or procedures.
