2022 marks a double anniversary regarding sustainable development: that of the Stockholm Conference in 1972, and that of the Rio Conference 20 years later: we could have expected a major UN event, such as the Johannesburg Conference, which celebrated the 10th anniversary of Rio, or the “RIO+20” Conference. But the crisis of multilateralism, the consequences of the global health crisis, and of course the war in Ukraine have made it impossible to celebrate. Only Sweden, with UN Environment organized two days of meetings, publishing the report “Stockholm+50, Unlocking a Better Future”, to feed the next Future Summit of 2023. This is a good opportunity to look back on fifty years of international negotiations without which the subject would not have flourished, but whose results are not up to the increasingly dizzying challenges.
