The gamut of characteristics pertaining to the register of presence/absence that results from touch constitutes the first work of primitive symbolisation attempted by the psyche but the guiding thread in the organisation of personality. This hypothesis is supported by evidence of embryological development. Its relational and clinical consequences are also examined.
