The author uses clinical sequences from a dyadic mother-child psychotherapy in order to confront the notion of stress with psychoanalytical concepts. He shows how the child and the mother try to free themselves from the traumatic burden brought on by an early somatic attack suffered by the child, through the psychotherapeutic process enabling the revival of associative activity and the ability to link representations.
