'? The perceptive trace accompanies the phenomenon of unsatisfied need and is at the origin of an anti-analytic and self-destructive tendency. The re-activation of this trace renews the risk of death that characterises early infancy. The death drive is, in other words, originally linked to the failure of the external object that, in a similar manner to libido, assures survival and constitutes a form of support when the infant's vital needs are satisfied.
