Pieces of the Fraternal and Distinctive Outcomes

The author considers the different forms of fraternal bond and their outcomes. She underlines both the dialectics at play between a lack of differentiation and differentiation and bisexuality. Whilst the identificatory process that entails desexualisation is commonly considered to constitute a happy outcome of the fraternal relation, the latter nevertheless needs to be successfully attained. One might thus consider that « A child is beaten ” represents a fraternal bond in which the work of desexualisation is unsuccessful. One might also pose that one of the identificatory outcomes of the fraternal relation is an actual fraternal function, that is to say, an identification that has a mediatory role, opening out onto other objects and the socius.
