From a metapsychological point of view, let us pose that infantile sexuality occupies an intermediary place between narcissistic autoerotism and post-Œdipal objectal erotism. It thus lays the foundations for preliminary erotic play. This underlying theoretical schema is, however, completely undermined by clinical experience. Ordinary psychic functioning in dislocated topics shows that infantile sexuality has multiple and diverse outcomes in a concomitant fashion. The latter can furthermore be subjected to inhibition and serve as a compensatory solution for both defective narcissistic structures and anti-traumatic operations. The analyst is indeed subjected to the incoherence that results from these clinical complications on a daily basis.
