Construction in Everyday Analysis

The two pivotal references in this paper are Freud's idea that construction constitutes a preliminary mode of work and J.?Press' idea that the latter represents a working through of the gaze and form of thought that characterise the analysing couple in order to allow psychic material to come to light. The objective of this working-through is a meaningful reconstruction of the present, which is, of course, the ultimate aim of both analysis and any historical examination. We propose, with reference to an analogous notion of Bion's and to everyday clinical material that reveals transformations based on remembering (and effectively acting as constructions) together with more typical constructions, to compare the result of this work of construction to scaffolding that is able, for a time, to constitute a support for psychic productions that would not have come about without this particular form of framework. These preliminary constructions/productions must, however, later be eliminated, just as if they were dreams. The notion of a psychic transformation that is able to come about in a context of conflictuality and that aims to presentify symbolic configurations, is of primary importance in this respect.
