Based on a clinical account of a severe somatic disorganization in a young man during the pubescent period, the theme of the maternal is presented with respect to the failure of negation, an essential mechanism in the construction of identity in adolescence. Denial which is dialectically opposed to negation is presented here as an intermediary stage on the way to mentalization and the ability to access the paternal dimension.;
