Psychosomatics: the Role of Unconscious Fantasy

The author proposes that there is a relationship between psychosomatic disorders and psychic conflict with its underlying unconscious phantasies as they are lived out in and through the body. –These early unconscious embodied phantasies are based on primitive sensory experiences and feelings and can show attributes similar to the ones y by Freud as characteristic of the primary processes. The relationship between psychosomatic symptoms and unconscious phantasies is explored in the light of Bion’s contributions. The case of an adolescent girl suffering from extensive eczema to showes how her highly conflictive unresolved relationship to her dead mother was relived in the transference relationship via the body.
