Time is unified and indivisible in the work of the cure. But these objects—the unconscious and the demands particular to “being conscious”—impose on it three distinctive traits: its rhythm, composed of “resistances”; its slowness, due to the obstacles put in its way by the mind’s rational forces, and to the psychic difficulty of re-figuring what repression has abolished; and the figure of the “après-coup,” according to which a traumatic childhood event must be reactualized in transference before it can definitively be inscribed in memory. Following Lacan, Laplanche revealed the theoretical-clinical performance of this central Freudian concept by setting it against “privation,” the analyst’s position that ultimately sets the analytic process in motion.
