Time is a real dimension of the physical universe and a subjective matter of mind. It carries a conflict between Time and Timelessness and serves constructive or negative ends, depending on the relationship to Eros and the Death Instinct as well as on the opposition between the Reality Principle and the Pleasure Principle. The “making” and inscribing of Time that is the articulating and ordering in the act of representation, symbolization and verbal linkage of previously unrepresented psychic elements, is central to psychic functioning and the psychoanalytic process. Clinical material will illustrate these processes and their relation to trauma: internal and external, massive and cumulative.
