The origins of the dream

Bion’s view of the dream differs fundamentally from Freud’s. What is important for Bion is to think-figure the proto-emotional experience hic et nunc, in order to metabolize it into a psychic emotion respecting the “truth” of lived experience. Without this first unconscious link, the subject cannot learn anything from his or her experience. The author hypothesizes an elaborative dimension of the unconscious Ego functioning as the dream-work alpha (Bion). In addition to the emotional state, the state of the soma is taken into account. Clinical examples illustrate this.
