From the traumatic to the drives

The notion of trauma runs through all of Freud’s work. It evolves according to three theoretical phases: an etiological phase, an economic phase, and a structural phase. The turning point in Freud’s thinking is the link he establishes between the traumatic and the drives. The traumatic is represented by sexual drives, and the drives by the anti-excitation effects of the death drive. Contemporary works by psychosomaticists and André Green have extended Freud’s work and developed the two destinies of the traumatic: the search for satisfaction and the search for calm.
