The author reconsiders the ??maternal shadow?? described by Abensour to present the case of a bilingual patient who suddenly switches from one language to another in her account in the session. These linguistic leaps are initially difficult for the analyst to understand and interpret. Following the revelation of a traumatic family event, a hypothesis is put forward. These linguistic breaks are the foundation of the trauma that cannot be elaborated, which can stay repressed through the change of language. The paternal language is thus used by the patient to escape the melancholic lure of the maternal language.
